small, shallow meteorite crater in farmland near Haviland, Kansas, U.S. The depression is oval in shape, measuring 57 by 37 feet (17 by 11 m). The first meteoritic fragment was found at the site in 1885, but the shallow crater was not identified until 1925. A typical impact structure, it is thought to be two craters partially superimposed. Meteoritic fragments up to several hundred kilograms (1 kg equals 2.2 pounds) in weight are spread over an area of several square miles. This is thought to indicate that several small meteorites fell in the area.
