synthetic drug used locally as an antiseptic and orally as an anthelmintic, or worming agent. The drug is effective against hookworm (Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale) and intestinal roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides). Its irritation of the oral or gastrointestinal mucous membranes may cause the patient some distress, but it eliminates intestinal worms by the same irritant action. Used locally, hexylresorcinol is effective against many microorganisms.
