Meaning of HIALEAH in English

city, Dade county, southeastern Florida, U.S. It lies on the Miami River Canal, just northwest of Miami. Settled in 1910 by the aviation pioneers, James Bright and Glenn Curtiss, the town took its name from a Seminole Indian word meaning "pretty prairie." The town grew slowly until World War II brought industrial development to the region. Although there is some manufacturing, the city serves mainly as a residential suburb of Miami. The horse-racing track Hialeah Park (opened Jan. 25, 1925) became famous for its elaborate landscaping and imported flamingos nesting on an infield lake. Inc. town, 1917; city, 1925. Pop.
