Meaning of HILLSBORO in English

town, Pocahontas county, eastern West Virginia, U.S., near the Greenbrier River and nestled in the Allegheny Mountains, 25 miles (40 km) north-northeast of Lewisburg. Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park commemorates a battle fought there (November 6, 1863) during the American Civil War. Union forces led by General William Averell, after camping at Hillsboro, defeated a Confederate army under General John Echols, ending the last serious Confederate presence in the state. The author Pearl S. Buck was born (1892) in Hillsboro, and her birthplace, Stulting House (1858), is preserved as a museum. The town is located in a farming region (livestock, dairying, and fruit), and Calvin Price State Forest, Watoga State Park, and Cranberry Glades Botanical Area in Monongahela National Forest are nearby. Pop. (1990) 188; (1998 est.) 198.
