HISARLIK

archaeological mound in Turkey, long known to bear the remains of the Hellenistic and Roman town of Ilium. It lies on the Kkmenederes River near the mouth of the Dardanelles. In 1822 it was identified by Charles Maclaren as the site also of Homeric Troy (q.v.), an identification adopted and demonstrated as correct by Heinrich Schliemann in excavations between 1870 and 1890.
