city, North RhineWestphalia Land (state), northwestern Germany, southwest of Cologne. The district was frequented by the Romans, and the name appeared in Frankish times. Its history was linked with that of Cologne. It is a centre of truck farming and lignite mining, and its manufactures include coal briquettes, stoneware, and automobiles. Hrth is the administrative centre for the neighbouring Kottenforst-Ville nature park. Pop. (1991 est.) 50,808.
