The centre of Iceland's hothouse industry, Hveragerdhi is noted for its fruit (especially tomatoes and even bananas), vegetables, and flowers, all of which are grown under glass. The hothouses are heated by steam from the numerous hot springs nearby. The national horticultural school is located there. Pop. (1991 est.) 1,598.
