city, Osaka fu (urban prefecture), Honshu, Japan. It lies on the Fukuchiyama Line (railway), northwest of Osaka. Settled in prehistoric times, Ikeda was a flourishing trade centre during the Tokugawa era (16031867). After the development of railway transport in the late 19th century, it served as a residential suburb of Osaka. The city's industries include brewing, woodworking, and the manufacture of automobiles and photographic equipment. Garden trees are cultivated in the surrounding area, where residential housing has replaced much farmland. Osaka International Airport adjoins the southern margins of the city. Pop. (1992 est.) 104,268.
