city, Warren county, south central Iowa, U.S., 17 mi (27 km) south of Des Moines. Founded in 1849 as the county seat, its name was taken from a newspaper account of a Texas town of the same name. Economic factors include feed milling, the manufacture of pickup campers, and Simpson College (founded there in 1860). Lake Ahquabi State Park is nearby. Indianola is the site of the National Hot Air Balloon Championship, held annually (August) on the college campus. Inc. 1863. Pop. (1990) 11,340.
