city, Hiroshima Prefecture (ken), western Honshu, Japan. Innoshima is a small offshore island in the Inland Sea, originally settled by pirates. After the decline of piracy in the 17th century, the island was left to fishermen. After the Russo-Japanese War, Hitachi Shipbuilding established a modern dockyard. In 1964 the 100,800-ton supertanker Oimaru, then the largest ship ever built on a building slip, was launched. Innoshima was designated a city in 1953. Pop. (1980) 38,579.
