INTESTINAL DIVERTICULUM

Meaning of INTESTINAL DIVERTICULUM in English

abnormal pocket in the wall of the intestine, found singly or in large numbers along the small intestine but more frequently along the colon (diverticulosis). Diverticulosis occurs in 5 to 10 percent of persons more than 40 years old; its cause is unknown, but weakness of the intestinal wall and increased pressure within the channel of the intestine are probably significant factors. The diverticula usually produce no symptoms, although occasionally they may bleed, even when there is no inflammation. In about 20 percent of persons with diverticulosis, the diverticula become inflamed (diverticulitis), producing pain, chills and fever, obstruction of the bowel, and, in severe cases, bleeding and perforation of the intestinal wall. Whereas medical treatment is usually adequate for mild and uncomplicated cases, surgical removal of infected portions of the colon may become necessary.
