also spelled Ivigtt, town in southwestern Greenland, on the 20-mi- (32-km-) long Arsuk Fjord, southeast of Frederikshb. Nearby is a large open-pit cryolite mine (deposit discovered in 1794) of major economic importance to Greenland. Although the mine was closed in 1963, the stockpiled cryolite is still being exported. The community, founded in 1864 with the opening of the mine, has a radio station. During World War II a U.S. military naval base was built at the head of Arsuk Fjord; it is now the headquarters of Grnnedal, the Greenland Command. Pop. (1990 est.) 4.
