city, southeastern So Paulo estado (state), Brazil, lying along the Paraba do Sul River. The settlement was granted town status in 1653 and was made the seat of a municipality in 1849. The local economy depends mainly upon dairying, but coffee, rice, corn (maize), fruits, and feijo (beans) are also cultivated in the surrounding area. Food processing, distilling, tanning, and the manufacture of boxes are the city's main industries. Jacare can be reached by rail or road from So Paulo city, 57 miles (92 km) southwest. It also has an airfield. Pop. (1981) 104,241.
