formerly Szolnok, megye (county), east-central Hungary. Situated in the Great Hungarian Plain, the county is drained from north to south by the Tisza River. In the northwest the Zagyva River flows across the Jszsg, a marginal depression of the plain, which extends into Pest county and produces vegetables, fruit, and poultry for the Budapest market. East of the Tisza is the Nagykunsg, which is a loess plain covered with a high-grade chernozem (black) soil. It is mostly farmland, with high yields of wheat and corn (maize), while in the irrigated areas along the rivers there is rice farming. Apart from Szolnok town, the county seat, principal communities are Jszberny, Mez otr, Karcag, and Trkszentmikls. Area 2,165 square miles (5,607 square km). Pop. (1991 est.) 424,430.
