city, central So Paulo estado (state), Brazil, on the Ja River, a tributary of the Tiet River, at an elevation of 1,775 feet (541 m) above sea level. It was given town status and made the seat of a municipality in 1866. Coffee, feijo (beans), cotton, rice, sugarcane, and a variety of fruits are grown locally. Ja processes these crops, distills liquor, and also manufactures shoes, ceramics, and electrical appliances. Goods are transported to So Paulo city, the state capital, 168 miles (270 km) southeast, and to neighbouring cities by rail, road, and air. Pop. (1985 est.) mun., 92,547.
