Meaning of JAYAPURA in English

also spelled Djajapura, formerly Sukarnapura, or Hollandia, city, kabupaten (regency), and capital of Irian Jaya propinsi (West Irian province), eastern Indonesia, on the northern coast of the island of New Guinea. It is a port on Teluk (bay) Jos Sudarso (Humboldt Bay) at the foot of the Pegunungan (mountains) Cycloop (7,087 ft ). During World War II the Japanese established an air base there; U.S. forces took the area in 1944 and Hollandia became the headquarters of Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Industries now produce furniture, textiles, beverages, chemicals, and transport equipment. It has an airport and is the site of the Universitas Cenderawasih (founded 1962). Pop. (1980) city, 149,618; regency, 151,308.
