JEREMIE

town, southwestern Haiti, on the far northwestern coast of the long Tiburon Peninsula. Situated on the Gulf of Gonaves, it lies 120 miles (190 km) west of Port-au-Prince but is difficult to reach because of the condition of the mostly gravel roads. The main town of the area, Jrmie is an active port for local trade, especially in cacao, coffee, sugarcane, bananas, and timber. There is some tourism and fishing. Pop. (1982 prelim.) 18,493.
