Meaning of JONQUIRE in English

city, SaguenayLac-Saint-Jean region, southern Quebec province, Canada. It lies along the Rivire aux Sables, a tributary of the Saguenay. Named after the Marquis de La Jonquire, who was governor of New France (174952), it originated as an agricultural settlement in the mid-19th century and grew to become an important lumber and wood-pulp centre. Additional employment is provided by a huge aluminum plant. In the mid-1970s the cities of Arvida, Jonquire, and Knogami and the municipality of Saint-Dominique-de-Jonquire were dissolved to facilitate the incorporation of a new, enlarged Jonquire. Inc. village, 1904; town, 1912; city, 1956, reincorporated 1975. Pop. (1991) city, 57,933; Chicoutimi-Jonquire metropolitan area, 137,715.
