Greenlandic Qaqortoq principal town in southwestern Greenland, on Julianehb Fjord, an inlet in the Davis Strait. Founded in 1755 by Anders Olsen, a Norwegian merchant, and named for Queen Juliana Maria of Denmark, it is a seaport and trading station. Sheep raising, meat-packing, sealing, and fish canning are the chief occupations. During World War II U.S. forces built Bluie West 1, now Narssarssuaq Airport. Just north of the town is the site of Brattahlid (meaning steep mountain), Erik the Red's homestead and the first Norse settlement (982) in Greenland. Pop. (1990 est.) 3,127.
