city, in the highlands of southern So Paulo estado (state), Brazil. It lies at 2,460 feet (750 m) above sea level along the Jundia River. Formerly called Porta do Serto, Mato Grosso de Jundia, and Vila Formosa de Nossa Senhora do Destrro de Jundia, it was given town status and made the seat of a municipality in 1865. Both agricultural and industrial activities contribute to the city's economy. Crops raised in the surrounding area include grapes, coffee, cotton, rice, and corn (maize). Steel, textiles, ceramics, and furniture are manufactured in the city, and wine and foodstuffs are processed. Goods are transported by road and rail to So Paulo city, the state capital, 40 miles (65 km) southeast, and to neighbouring cities. An airfield is nearby. Pop. (1991 prelim.) mun., 312,517.
