KABELVG

Meaning of KABELVG in English

historical village of the Lofoten island group, Nordland fylke (county), northern Norway. It is on the southern shore of Austvgya island, just southwest of Svolvr, chief town of the Lofoten. Kabelvg was founded as Vgan in the early 12th century by King ystein, who built a church and fishermen's hostel there. For many centuries the small port, situated at the base of steep, picturesque cliffs, was important in the traditional cod fisheries. The port has fallen into disuse, and Kabelvg is now known chiefly as a summer resort. Near the village is a statue of ystein. The herredskommune (rural commune), which includes Kabelvg, is named Vgan after the ancient settlement. Pop. (1970) 1,179.
