born Feb. 24, 1885, Rzeszw, Galicia [now in Poland] died Aug. 6 or 10, 1944, Warsaw Polish novelist and short-story writer whose experimental realist works savagely satirized Polish society after World War I. After studying music, he joined the 1st Brigade of the Pilsudski Legions in 1914 and between 1918 and 1920 served as chief of the press service of the Polish army. The novels for which Kaden-Bandrowski is best known include Czarne skrzydla (192829; Black Wings) and Mateusz Bigda (1933; Matthew Bigda), works that describe society in Poland's coal-mining regions and life in Polish government circles. An earlier volume of short stories, Miasto mojej matki (1925; My Mother's Town), consists of childhood reminiscences.
