KANAPOI FOSSIL

Meaning of KANAPOI FOSSIL in English

well-preserved distal humerus of a hominid species estimated to have lived more than 2.5 million years ago, found near Lake Rudolph, in northwestern Kenya, in 1965 by Bryan Patterson. The discovery of antelope remains at the same site convinced scientists that the bone was a hominid fossil rather than a chimpanzee fossil, for chimpanzee fossils would have been found only in a forest environment. The fossil is generally assumed to be associated with Australopithecus boisei. It was a significant find because it pushed the record of known remains of Australopithecus back further than had been earlier estimated.
