village, Bern canton, southwest-central Switzerland. It lies in the upper valley of the Kander River, in the Bernese Oberland, southwest of Interlaken. It is a mountaineering and winter-sports resort; the Blmlisalphorn (12,018 feet ), Balmhorn (12,168 feet ), and Doldenhorn (11,952 feet ) are nearby. As the highest station on the north side of the Bern-Lotschberg-Simplon railway, it has direct connections with Rome, Paris, Brussels, and the English Channel ports. Mountain walks or railways lead to the Alpine schinen Lake and Blau Lake and over Gemmi Pass to Valais canton. The inhabitants are German speaking and mainly Protestant. Pop (1980) 959.
