city, Kangwon do (province), northeastern South Korea. A coastal city on the Sea of Japan (East Sea), it has been the administrative and economic centre for the eastern areas of the T'aebaek Mountains from ancient times. The city's many historical remains include Ojukhyon, an ancient shrine. It has a good bathing beach, and Kyongpodae , a scenic site 4 miles (6 km) north of the city, attracts tourists. Industry in the city has not developed except for some silk weaving. Pop. (1980) 116,806; (1990) 152,678.
