town, west-central Senegal. It lies on the right bank of the Saloum River, 95 miles (150 km) southeast of Dakar. An ocean and river port with an important export trade in peanuts (groundnuts) and salt, it is linked by rail with Guinguino (13 miles northeast) and the Dakar-Niger railway. It is also the hub of the road network that serves both the southern and eastern parts of Senegal. Kaolack is the centre of the Tijaniyah order of Islam, whose great mosque of al-Haij Ibrahim Niasse is just outside the town. Pop. (1992 est.) 179,894.
