market town and capital, noms (department) of Kardhtsa, Greece. It lies in the southwestern Thessaly (Thessala) plain near the Pmisos River. Laid out in rectilinear fashion by the Ottoman Turks, the town serves the grafa region of the eastern Pindus range as well as western Thessaly. Kardhtsa is primarily a commercial centre for agricultural products, though there are deposits of methane gas in the vicinity. In the Pindus, 12 miles (19.5 km) west-southwest, is a hydroelectric dam and its reservoir on the Mgdhova, a tributary of the Achelous River. Pop. (1981) 27,291.
