A traditional trade centre (yams, tobacco, cattle, and sheep) among the Baule (Baoule), Senufo (Senoufo), and Diula (Dioula) peoples, it is also the seat of a Roman Catholic bishop and the site of several schools. Women of the local Mangoro ethnic group are noted potters, and Katiola has a modern school of ceramics and sends pottery to Abidjan for sale. Pop. (1975) town, 18,625.
