Meaning of KAVIENG in English

chief port of New Ireland, Papua New Guinea, on Balgai Bay at the island's northern tip. It is a port of call for interisland and Australian shipping and handles copra, cocoa, and trochus and green snail shells (for buttons). The coral-surfaced 120-mile (193-kilometre) East Coast Road links Kavieng with coastal plantations and villages, and the town has air facilities to other parts of the country. Occupied by the Japanese during World War II, Kavieng was frequently bombed by Allied aircraft in 194344. Pop. (1990) 6,486.
