Meaning of KELANG in English

formerly Klang, town, west central Selangor state, West Malaysia (Malaya), on the Sungai (River) Kelang and the 40-mi (64-km) Kuala LumpurPort Kelang railway. The state capital until 1880, it is now the administrative centre of a rubber- and fruit-growing district. During the 19th-century tin rush, Klang served as a port of entry to the central region. Formerly noted for its coffee, it began intensive production of rubber in the 1890s, when the price of coffee fell, and rubber was planted on cleared local estates. Industries include pineapple canning and the manufacture of rubber footwear and herbicides. Nearby Connaught Bridge is a large thermal-electric power station. The Istana (palace) Alam Shah is the residence of the sultan of Selangor. Pop. (1980) 192,080.
