city, seat (1850) of Kenosha county, southeastern Wisconsin, U.S. It lies along Lake Michigan at the Pike River estuary, just north of the Illinois state line. Founded in 1835, it was first called Pike Creek, then Southport, and in 1850 it was renamed Kenosha (Potawatomi for pike, or pickerel). A St. Lawrence Seaway port, the city has diversified manufactures, including automobiles, furniture, apparel, and metal products. It is the seat of Carthage College (1847), Gateway Technical CollegeKenosha Campus (1912), and the University of WisconsinParkside (1968). The first public school in Wisconsin was opened in Kenosha in 1849. The city's Harmony Hall is the headquarters for the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. Inc. 1850. Pop.
