city, seat of Mohave county, since 1882 the shopping and shipping centre for the sparsely settled northwestern area of Arizona, U.S. The city was named for Lewis Kingman, a locating engineer for the railroad constructed there in the 1880s. Kingman was incorporated as a city on Jan. 21, 1952. Ghost towns in the area attest to the lode mines that once yielded many millions of dollars in gold. Tourism, copper mining, and livestock ranching are now the chief economic pursuits in the locality. Kingman is 25 miles (40 km) east of Lake Mohave and also has access to Lakes Mead and Havasu. East of the city is the million-acre Hualapai Indian Reservation. The Mohave Museum of History and Arts in Kingman depicts the history of northwest Arizona. Mohave Community College, founded in 1971, is in Kingman. Pop. (1994 est.) 15,943.
