city, North RhineWestphalia Land (state), western Germany. It lies in the Siebengebirge (Seven Hills), on the right (east) bank of the Rhine River, just south of Bonn. The Drachenfels (Dragon's Rock), a hill 1,053 feet (321 m) high, is crowned by a ruined castle built in the 12th century by the archbishop of Cologne and destroyed by the French in the 17th century. According to the Nibelungen legends, the Drachenloch (Dragon's Cave) in the hill sheltered the dragon slain by the hero Siegfried. The hillside quarries supplied stone for the building of the Cologne cathedral. Heisterbach, a ruined Cistercian abbey, is nearby. The city is a centre for a resort area. Pop. (1989 est.) 34,136.
