town, Radom wojewdztwo (province), east-central Poland. It lies 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Radom city, the provincial capital, and 5 miles (8 km) southwest of the Vistula River. The economy is based on the production of resin and turpentine, paper, and chemicals; it is also the site of Poland's largest hard-coal-burning power plant. Kozienice was first chronicled in the 12th century as the location of the Norbertine monastery and cloister; town rights were received in 1549. During the late 18th century it had an ammunition and small-arms factory. A German concentration camp was located there during World War II. Pop. (1991 est.) 21,200.
