in some Tantric (esoteric) forms of Yoga, the cosmic energy that is believed to lie within everyone, pictured as a coiled serpent lying at the base of the spine. In the practice of Laya Yoga (Union of Mergence), the adept is instructed to awaken the kundalini, also identified with the deity Shakti. Through a series of techniques that combine prescribed postures, gestures, and breathing exercises, the practitioner brings the kundalini up along the spine to his head. On the way the kundalini passes through six imagined centres, or cakras. When the kundalini arrives at the seventh cakra, at the top of the head, the practitioner experiences an overwhelming and indescribable feeling of bliss that mystically represents the practitioner's reintegration with atman, or the eternal essence of the self. The exercises used by the adept to achieve this union involve the purificatory practices, bodily postures, breathing, and meditation exercises that are common to other forms of Yoga.
