town, now part of Greater Cessnock, eastern New South Wales, Australia. It was laid out in 1902 as a centre for the surrounding coalfields, its name coming from an Aboriginal term meaning either man or the first. Nearby is the town of Weston, another coal-mining town, established in 1903. The principal industry in Kurri Kurri is an aluminum smelter, which began operating in 1969, but coal mining remains important, as does the manufacture of clothing. The surrounding area is given to poultry raising, orcharding, dairying, and sawmilling. Sydney lies 106 miles (170 km) to the south. Kurri Kurri was linked with Cessnock, Weston, and Bellbird in 1966 to form the local government area of Greater Cessnock. Pop. (1986) including Weston, 13,411; (1991) including Weston, 13,268.
