town, central Victoria, Australia. It is situated approximately 124 miles (200 km) north of Melbourne. The name Kyabram comes from an Aboriginal word meaning thick forest. The settlement grew up after the arrival of the railway line from Melbourne in 1887 and the completion of an irrigation system in 1891. Kyabram was gazetted as a borough in 1954 and as a town in 1973. It is the service centre for a region that is devoted to agriculture and fruit growing, and within the town fruit is canned and clothing and agricultural machinery are manufactured. Pop. (1993 est.) 6,030.
