LAKHIMPUR

city, north-central Uttar Pradesh state, northern India, on the North-Eastern Railway. It is just northwest of Kheri town, with which it is almost contiguous. The surrounding region is known for its extensive tea gardens; rice, jute, and other crops are also grown, and silkworms are raised. Lakhimpur has several colleges affiliated with Dibrugarh University. Pop. (1981) 61,003; (1991 prelim.) 79,549.
