Straus (eds.), Forerunners of Darwin: 17451859 (1959), an appraisal of Lamarck's contribution to evolutionary thought; and Philip C. Ritterbush, Overtures to Biology: The Speculations of Eighteenth-Century Naturalists (1964), a general account of speculative themes in 18th-century natural history. Two important translations of Lamarck's writings are by Hugh Elliott, Zoological Philosophy (1914, reprinted 1963), his major speculative work; and by Albert V. Carozzi, Hydrogeology (1964), an excellent modern edition of his work on the physical globe.
