( (Icelandic: Book of Settlements), ) also called Landnma, unique Icelandic genealogical record, probably originally compiled in the early 12th century by Ari Thorgilsson the Learned, though it exists in several versions of a later date. It lists the names of 400 original settlers of Iceland, their Norwegian origins, and their descendants. Their landholdings also are described with minute topographical accuracy. Occasionally the lists of names are enlivened by anecdotes of marriages or feuds or by brief but vivid character sketches. The Landnmabk served as the source for many Icelandic sagas.
