The article London from the 3rd edition (178897) of Encyclopdia Britannica was divided into 170 sections for ready reference. Section 53 treats the Leadenhall district of the city. Although the article is unsigned, it makes frequent use of observations by the naturalist Thomas Pennant, author of Some Account of London, published in 1790. The following is presented in modern typography for ease in reading but otherwise retains the original spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and italicsincluding typographical errors. Leadenhall The 3rd edition text neglects to mention that both the granary and the market were destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666, but the market was soon rebuilt.
