It lies at the foot of the promontory of Sant'Angelo (ancient Ecnomus), the site of the town of Phintias, founded about 281 BC. During World War II Licata was an initial invasion point where Allied forces from North Africa landed on July 10, 1943. Vegetables and cereals are grown, and sulfur is mined and exported. Chemical fertilizers, pasta, and flour are produced. Pop. (1989 est.) mun., 42,638.
