until 1990 a Stadtbezirk (urban district) of East Berlin, German Democratic Republic. A distinct town dating from before the 1280s, it underwent rapid industrial growth between the Franco-German War of 187071 and the beginning of World War I in 1914. In 1920 Lichtenberg, enlarged to include Friedrichsfelde and other rural parishes, was made a district of the city of Berlin. Its area of 10 square miles (26 square km) includes open areas on the outskirts of the city as well as industrial and densely residential areas near the centre. Manufacturing includes tools, clothing, and furniture. The district has an electrical-power plant. A municipal cemetery, the Zentralfriedhof Friedrichsfelde, contains the graves of the socialists Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg and the artist Kthe Kollwitz. Pop. (1989 est.) 177,158.
