born Aug. 30, 1785, Hou-kuan, Fukien province, China died Nov. 22, 1850, Ch'ao-chou, Kwangtung province Pinyin Lin Zexu leading Chinese scholar and official of the Ch'ing (Manchu) dynasty, known for his role in the events leading up to the Anglo-Chinese Opium War (183942). He was a proponent of the revitalization of traditional Chinese thought and institutions, a movement that became known as the Self-Strengthening Movement.
