single genus of the Leiopelmatidae family of small frogs (order Anura). The genus contains three species, which are confined to mountainous areas in New Zealand. These frogs possess numerous primitive characteristics and are considered to be closely related to the tailed frog (Ascaphus truei) of the northwestern United States. The eggs are laid in moist habitats out of the water and develop into frogs without going through a tadpole stage.
