After rising in the Norwegian border mountains it flows for 270 miles (430 km) in a generally southeasterly direction through the provinces of Hrjedalen and Hlsingland past the towns of Sveg, Ljusdal, and Bollns to the Gulf of Bothnia at Ljusne. With a drainage area of 7,650 square miles (19,800 square km), it is the largest river in Hlsingland and one of the most important rivers in Sweden. It is a source of hydroelectric power and is known for its salmon.
