MARAWI

formerly Dansalan, chartered city, capital of Lanao del Sur province, north central Mindanao, Philippines. On the northern shore of Lake Lanao, 3,500 ft (1,100 m) above sea level, it is one of the largest cities in the Philippines inhabited by Muslims (Moros). An important trading centre specializing in Muslim handicrafts and bladed weapons, it is the seat of Mindanao State University (1961), Dansalan College, and Pangarungan Islam Colleges (1965). Camp Keithley, former U.S. military headquarters for Mindanao, is nearby. The 1972 Muslim rebellion began in Marawi. Inc. city, 1940. Pop. (1980) 53,812.
