born c. 157 BC, , Cereatae, near Arpinum , Latium [now in Italy] died Jan. 13, 86 BC, Rome Roman general and politician, consul seven times (107, 104100, 86 BC), who was the first Roman to illustrate the political support that a successful general could derive from the votes of his old army veterans. Additional reading E. Badian, Foreign Clientelae (1958, reissued 1984), gives a general account of the period. Thomas Francis Carney, A Biography of C.
