city, Chiba Prefecture (ken), Honshu, Japan, on the Joban Line (railway), east of the centre of Tokyo. During the Tokugawa era (16031867), Matsudo was a post town on the Mito-kaido (Mito Highway) and a port on the Tone-gawa (Tone River) and the Edo-gawa. After World War II it became a residential and industrial suburb of the TokyoYokohama Metropolitan Area, its factories including ironworks and engineering works. Pop. (1983 est.) 418,490.
