city, western Madhya Pradesh state, central India. It lies on the southern Malwa Plateau, the watershed of the Chambal and Narmada river basins. The city, formerly a large British cantonment, was founded in 1818. It remains an important cantonment and has an airport; dairy farming is a major industry. There is a government college affiliated with the University of Indore. Pop. (1991 prelim.) cantonment, 74,852; metropolitan area, 83,649.
